The ongoing support and maintenance of a hospital presents a myriad of challenges, from reducing hospital-acquired infection rates to safely moving patients between locations, and from sterilising equipment to running black-out tests. This is why services need to be designed around not only the facilities and physical environment but also the patients, visitors and staff and their day-to-day activities.
Over and above this, both public and private hospitals are facing challenging economic conditions, and are required to continually drive efficiencies, enhance savings, improve sustainability and add value to their services on a daily basis.

Catering
We support our patient catering through our retail outlet, Time Out. We serve over 900,000 meals a year to patients, staff and visitors and have been awarded the 5-star status by the Department of Environmental Health at Dudley Group of Hospitals and trialled a low carbon menu as part of the 10:10 campaign at University College London Hospital.
Cleaning
Maintaining a clean environment is crucial in a hospital, and we work closely with Infection Control departments to ensure these standards are met. We also use a range of sustainable cleaning products which are proven to reduce both Healthcare Acquired Infections and water and chemical usage whilst increasing productivity by 30 per cent.
Estates management
Our 24/7 service centre answers over 5,000 hospital enquiries a day. We, therefore, understand the importance of managing your estate to support you. We have achieved 99.5 per cent response times in maintenance and undertake whole life costing and business focused maintenance regimes. We have introduced PDAs to further improve response times and reduce downtime, whilst enabling better tracking and management of tasks.
Transport and logistics
We are responsible for moving a range of items, such as health records, blood, radioactive pharmaceuticals and diagnostic specimens, which need to be moved timely, promptly, and in accordance with legalisation. We also provide a courier service to over 120 local doctors' surgeries, where specimens and mail are delivered and collected on a daily basis.
Portering
At The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, we achieved a 99.85 per cent moves success rate, which includes 17,000 patient moves per month; 230,000 items of linen collected per month; 130 tonnes of waste collected per month; and 180,000 items of mail handled per month. We also improved porter response times by 20 per cent along with cost reductions of £130,000.
Security
We deliver a 24/7 security service, with staff being trained in major incident response processes and decontamination along with regular business continuity updates. We are aware of the unique threats in a hospital environment and work with the hospitals to ensure everything from maternity to car parks are managed safely and securely.
